Every Art student at the University of Mary Hardin- Baylor must put together an exhibition before they graduate! I wanted to share with you guys the inspiration behind mine. Many of my pots are for sale so go check them out as well! Below is my artist statement that briefly explains my senior exhibition entitled “Morning and Evening.”
Artist Statement
The imagery of morning and evening is prominent throughout Scripture. The sun is born in the morning bringing with it new life and fresh beginnings, and in the evening it dies giving way to the darkness of night. Psalm 90 verse 6 says “in the morning it [the grass] flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers.” Likewise, humans are born into the world, and after a time we pass on to death.
Each of these pots was born from the dust just as God created man from the dust in Genesis. Clay symbolizes the created nature of humans. These pots are vessels; in the same way, we as humans are vessels. In this installation, each pot tells a story, but they are part of a bigger narrative like the contemporary artist Edmund de Waal’s installations of ceramic vessels as they work together in response to historical events, places, and archives.
My installation is made of individual, wheel-thrown pots each having slip-trailed designs on them which relate to morning, evening, and the journey of human life. As the viewer looks upon this installation, it is my hope that they will be reminded of the finiteness of human life, because it passes as quickly as the time between the morning and the evening.
